Book Review: My Darling Boy

Synopsis

The perfect night.

I had been so excited for our big New Year’s Eve party. Hosting with my best friend Alice and our two beautiful boys – my Leo and her Robbie, who had grown up together like brothers.

A shocking death.

But then I heard the terrible crash. I remember the flashing lights of the ambulance and how everyone then turned on Leo. Saying that Robbie was dead because of my son.

Who is to blame?

The boys had argued, but Leo still won’t tell me why. I know he’s keeping a secret from me. I need to find out the truth, need to clear the name of my darling boy before something terrible happens to him, too. But I also need to make sure no one finds out the truth about me…

Review

What a page turner! Helen’s books always give us a fabulous blend of mystery and character but My Darling Boy is exceptional.

This time, the focus is on the stereotypes and misconceptions of convicted felons and how family, friends and neighbours react. No matter how well you think you know someone, if they become a criminal over night, people’s perceptions change.

There is plenty deceit, but also fierce love and loyalty from the mothers, which makes the book realistic, as the community is forced to choose sides, whilst friends and family members struggle to stay neutral because of their own motivations and secrets.

Helen keeps us guessing throughout, with a few hints as to who is behind the pranks and weird behaviour, but as there are a few sub plots woven in, it’s hard to keep on track, and figure it all out.

The ending is entirely satisfying, once everything is straightened out and there is that little glimmer of hope we all need.

A fast-paced and exhilarating page turner!

Rating: 5 out of 5.
