Roxanna C. Revell ~ The New Order (Behind the Wall 2)
Synopsis
The New Order; the world without a wall, without a divide, where everyone lives as equals. It’s a safe haven. A place of freedom.
Eve left The Beneath behind, but she left her family, too. She can’t rest, won’t rest. Even if she wanted to, her new friend won’t let her.
Her new friend craves blood, revenge and justice. Eve’s new friendβ¦ the darkness, is always with her, and it has needs, too.
Review
The Beneath was one of my top reads for this year, so I was thrilled to read The New Order, which continues Eve and Noah’s journey, after escaping a fate worse than death.
After the intense narrative and heat of The Beneath, I didn’t think the sequel would be able to live up to my expectations. Yet somehow this book manages to be an excellent follow-on story, that in some ways offers even more.
I think the real brilliance with Revell’s writing is that the stories are plot and character driven. Both are strong and give the books a certain edge that is lacking in so many others.
I much preferred Eve in this book; she’s flawed, feisty and out for vengeance – my kind of woman and, like me, surprisingly good with a gun! I did miss Noah’s darkness, but his struggle to overcome his past and really be there for Eve was heart-warming and believable.
However, do not think that this book is warm and fuzzy. It is dark, passionate and twisted.
Sex scenes are raw and explicit. Nothing is hidden, nothing is glamourised. Sex can be beautiful and pleasurable, but it can also be a dangerous weapon, a form of punishment or brutal torture. At times I was horribly conflicted with my feelings, but I couldn’t stop reading.
We have only to analyse the characters of David, Scott and Ethan to feel slightly disgusted, utterly horrified or apoplectic with rage! Scott is a vile man, but what of the other two? Their characters, motives and personalities remain a mystery and become more so as we learn more about what’s really going on inside their heads… and there is a lot going on in their disturbed minds.
In fact, there are scenes in this book that will really mess with your head, images that will haunt you for days and sex that will ignite your soul. It’s fast-paced, gripping and keeps you on your toes.
Approach with caution, finish with satisfaction.
I was provided with an ARC by the author. All opinions my own.
